Shield nickel is the first 5 cents coin of the US. The shield design on the obverse is taken from the Great Seal of the United State by chief engraver James B .Longacre. The national motto, In God We Trust, encircules at the top of the shield and the date is located at the bottom. A large number 5 in the center of reverse clearly indicates the value of this coin. And 13 stars and the legent "United State of America" surrounded the number 5.
