The letter "L" is the designer's initial, stands for Longacre.
In the top sample picture, you can see small black circle and that is the location of the L. The actual L on the coin is rotated 90 degree clockwise.
If you have lower grade coin, like G or VG(or even Fine), it is really tough to find the "L".
In that case, you need to check the tip of the bust.
if it has pointed bust, the coin is 1864L, if the bust is thick and round(check the bottom picture), the coin is 1864 without "L".

The Copper Nickel 1864 cent is very thick while Bronze 1864 cent is thin.
