The Jefferson nickel design is a modification of a model by sculptor Felix Schlag. It features our third president on the obverse and his beautiful home Monticello on the reverse. In 1938, Schlag's design was chosen in an open competition which drew nearly 400 entries. Nickel production began in the fall of that year.
