When
first issued in 1916, the Standing Liberty quarter caused
a public furor due to Libery's exposed right breast. Part
way though 1917, a tunic of chain mail was added to make
Liberty more modest. Hermon A. MacNeil won a competition
for this coin's design. The obverse features Liberty standing
at the portals of our nation. Her outstretched right hand
holds on olive branch of peace; the left, an upraised shield
of defense with drapery falling away from it. The quarter's
composition is 90% silver and 10% copper. There were no
Proof coins of this type ever officially issued. |
